So, a little while ago Sainsbury's got in touch and asked if I'd collaborate with them to create some recipe videos. Of course, I immediately said yes! I'd say 90% of our food shopping now comes from Sainsbury's and the organic apples that go into Kidchup are Sainsbury's own so, the chance to create recipe content for them was beyond exciting.
The idea was to create dishes you could cook with your little one(s) (if they're feeling cooperative) and eat as family. Slightly easier than it sounds, Archie is a bit hit and miss in the kitchen. I wanted to create healthy dishes that potentially introduced you to some new textures and flavours and came together easily. Once I'd worked out what those dishes would be I set about heavily road testing them on as many families as I could to make sure they were actually something you'd want to have a crack at.
I'll be honest, I know how subjective food can be. Launching a food brand has repeatedly taught me that. You can't please everyone, you just have to work your socks of to create something you believe delivers on taste, test it, test it, test it, and hope people feel the same. I spent hours and hours working on and fine tuning these recipes and I'm really proud of how it's all come together.
The videos were shot after the Easter weekend on one jam packed day. Amazingly, they recreated something very close to my kitchen on set which was amazing. I'd be lying if I didn't tell you how incredibly nervous I was and it did take me a a little while to find my feet. I am not used to having a camera pointed at me and just jumping in. I was also worried about Archie's reaction to being on set and eating on cue but he took to it like a true natural. Having an incredibly supportive and tight knit crew helping me and Arch pull this off made the whole day a joy.
Here's the first recipe, mini Dutch Baby Pancakes with Blueberry sauce which is a wicked weekend brekkie. Traditionally Dutch Babies (not to be confused with dutch pancakes) are made in a cast iron pan and then sprinkled with icing sugar but I had to give them my remix and make them Archie friendly. I mean you're far more likely to have a muffin tin knocking about in a kitchen drawer than a cast iron pan for a start and little ones loving having their own individual portions. Making it with half white spelt and half plain flour makes them really light but you can go with straight plain flour which will make them more custardy. This blueberry sauce is so good and has a small amount of maple syrup which brings a really nice natural sweetness to the whole dish. If you have any left over try it over Greek yogurt it's so good! No more standing around flipping pancakes whilst the rest of the family tucks in, you can all just sit down at once and enjoy.
Without sounding like a diva at an awards ceremony, I want to give a big shout out to the crew who like I said were wonderful, supportive and truly a reassuring pair of hands bringing it all together on the day. The brilliant Director Dom Lashley who totally helped me find my groove, brought it all to life and never grumbled when Arch demand he come outside and race him constantly. The great gapher and all round dude Alex who helped make his studio feel like a home from home. The truly talented food stylist Laurie Perry who was beyond supportive on the day, soldiered on despite a pretty major burn and honestly made my food look far sexier than I ever could. The wonderful producer Sophie Gozlan who was just always on point and never short of a reassuring word. Finally, the ever brilliant Jacinta Szuman who came to me with the idea in the first place. Thanks for having faith in us y'all and making a dream come true!
