Stroud Green is on the up! Yes I said it. The main drag is still dominated by the marvel that is Pak (Four stores last time I counted) and long-standing favourites like Pizza Pappagone but there's a new breed of 'hip' eateries closing in on the neighbourhood. Now I know that Exter Street Bakery is a chain but it was one of the first new places I noticed had opened its doors and I wanted to try out an Italian-style cooked breakfast. Luckily the babe below had just moved in around the corner so it was the perfect excuse to test it out in fabulous company.
The menu mostly consists of 'things on toast' from avocado and bacon to a full fry-up. I ordered mushrooms on toast and Sarah had the beans and sausages. What arrived was very rustic and sadly a little underwhelming. The mushrooms were whole and still pretty chewy, they hadn't been cooked down to that wonderful point where they release all their juices and turn into a rich soft heap that is so good on toast. Sarah's beans were more stew-like and starchy which resulted in a rather heavy and stodgy breakfast when paired with toast. The sausages were tasty!
The service was on point, the staff were very friendly and the coffee was great however, the food left us disappointed. I have since been back with junior and again the service was great, they were super kid friendly and I was really hopeful for a better experience. This time I had bacon and avocado on toast, the veggie had the mushrooms and Archie had the beans and sausage. The bacon was very thick and cooked to within an inch of its life resulting in leathery texture and jaw ache, Archie ate a couple of spoonfuls of his then declined the rest but the veggie wanted it noted for the record that he enjoyed his a lot (we clearly have differing opinions on how we like our mushrooms cooked). All in all a semi-successful experience.
The pastries are good, the coffee is great and I'd be interested in trying their pizza but the cooked breakfast just ain't for me or junior!
