Sarah Akwisombe is, in her own words, akin to Betty Draper wearing Nike Air Max. She's a kick ass interiors blogger and stylist, and mum to 2-year-old daughter Marley. In just under 2 years since she launched it, her brilliant blog SarahAkwisombe.com has seen her trailblaze her way into the interiors world and resulted in Sarah winning awards and assisting on shoots for the likes of Marks and Spencer, BHS, Paint by Conran and DFS, alongside consulting for private clients. She's on a one-woman mission to turn the interiors world on its head, opening up what can often feel like an aloof and cliquey club to make it something we can all get excited about and feel empowered to try our hand at! She's also my never faltering interiors guru, always coming with fresh and honest ideas that even I can attempt.
As a fellow mama I wanted to get an insight into how she manages those often uninspiring midweek meals for her and hubby, little people being fussy eaters and what she does on those tough days to keep all those plates spinning!
What's your go-to midweek meal and why?
Jerk Salmon, sweet potato mash and greens as it's packed full of flavour but pretty simple to make (you can find Sarah's recipe at the end of the interview)
What are your top 3 tunes to cook to?
Lana Del Rey - High by the beach
Dire Straits - Sultans of Swing
Anything by Erik Satie
(You can find Sarah Cooking Anthems embeded below for your listening pleasure but be warned you'll need to have a Spotify account and you'll need to log in to play them!)
When your daughter Marley's being difficult about food what's your key to staying sane?
I just throw it away and don't worry about making her anything else! When she's being funny about food there's usually not much to be done, it just means she's not in the mood. I used to get really annoyed and stressed but at the end of the day it's not like she's going to starve.
You always look dope, what's your go-to piece of clothing that transports you from mum mode to fly mode?
Why thank you. I don't really have a difference in the two, I'm usually pretty casual anyway. The only difference between my days at home with Marley and others is that I put makeup on!
What's your current favourite pair of trainers?
What keeps you motivated and juggling it all?
Passion! I do everything like I mean it. Whether that's cooking, designing, playing. Otherwise what's the bloody point?
Sarah's Jerk Salmon with Sweet Potato mash for two and her cooking playlist:
2 Salmon fillets
5 Yellow sweet potatoes
1 Tsp of Jerk season (I use this one)
A handful of frozen green beans
1. The Jerk marinade comes in a jar so you just need to let the salmon sit in it for a few minutes (a tiny bit goes really far). Get your griddle pan hot over a medium heat and then griddle for aprox 10-12 minutes depending on how thick your fillets are.
2. The sweet potatoes can be boiled with the skin on, then you run them under cold water and the skin easy peels off after cooking, so no need for faffing about peeling potatoes.
3. Green beans can be bought in a big pack and frozen, then they only take a few minutes of boiling to be ready.
This is a low to medium effort meal haha! I add a blob of reggae sauce and mayo for a bit of a dip to finish it off!
